Extended statement
Nature, terrain, topography, and geology intertwine as I delve into the intricate relationship between landscapes and power dynamics. I aim to provoke contemplation on how landscapes can be used as tools of political, social, and cultural domination, while also serving as sites of resistance and contestation as well as that landscapes are not mere passive representations of the natural world but are actively involved in shaping and reflecting power dynamics. A space is meticulously crafted for profound dialogue and introspection, prompting viewers to contemplate the profound impact that landscapes wield over our collective consciousness and the construction of our world.
This collection encapsulates my explorations predominantly within New South Wales, delving into the intricate interplay between landscapes and power dynamics, both personally and historically. For instance, the Cowra POW site stands as a testament to its storied past, having detained political prisoners from diverse nationalities. Contrasting this, Belmore Falls serves as a personal symbol of solitary adventures aimed at photographic capture. Coogee Beach in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs evokes a sense of endless flux, with waves ceaselessly crashing onto rock and sand. The dam featured is a utilitarian marvel, satisfying our vital need for potable water. Lake George, believed to be over a million years old, ranks as one of Australia’s most extensively researched lakes. Lastly, Wollongong's Sea Cliff Bridge exemplifies adaptive engineering; it was constructed as a safer alternative to a cliff-side road vulnerable to rockfalls that could lead to prolonged closures.
